In a major accident, two children were killed and three others injured when the autorickshaw in which they were returning home from school collided with a canter. The incident happened in the Adarsh Nagar area of northwest Delhi.

The police said that the incident happened at around 1pm on Monday. According to the police, the canter collided head-on with the autorickshaw on the slip road on Route Number 51 in the Mukundpur area of Azadpur.

“The autorickshaw driver took a shortcut and swerved towards the slip road in Mukundpur. The canter was coming from the other side. Both were speeding and as the slip road is narrow, the canter hit the autorickshaw from the right side. The autorickshaw rolled and the children got crushed inside the vehicle,” said a senior police officer on condition of anonymity.

The deceased have been identified as Manisha Kumari (13) and Durga alias Jyoti (11). The three injured children have been identified as Jyoti (10), Sanju (11) and Divya (14), who is in a critical condition.

All of them were class V and VI students at the Government Girls Senior Secondary School No. 2 in Model Town Part-2 and lived in Mukundpur.

Bystanders rushed to the spot and extricated the children from the vehicle and called the police. While the deceased Manisha was taken to the

Sushruta Trauma Centre, where she was declared brought dead, others were rushed to the Babu Jagjivan Ram Hospital in the nearby Jehangirpuri.

The police have arrested the driver of the canter Akash Kashyap (40) and booked him for rash and negligent driving. “The driver was going towards Shalimar Bagh. We have arrested him and charged him with rash and negligent driving,” said a senior police officer. However, the autorickshaw driver is absconding and the hunt is on to arrest him.
