Delhi police have recovered Rs 50 lakh, suspected to be Hawala money, from two men in the Greater Kailash on Wednesday night. Police said the men were caught during a routine checking at a picket in the W-block.
"Bhawani Singh and Harish Kumar were stopped for routine checking. The pillion rider was carrying two bags which had money in it,” said a senior police officer.
The men failed to explain where the money had come from. Instead, they made the constables talk to someone over the phone. "The person the constable spoke to was called to the police station but he didn't show up even after two days. We have seized the cash and booked them,” the officer added.
Delhi police have also informed the Income Tax (IT) department about the recovery. The duo was produced before the local court. "Since the amount of cash is huge, the IT department has been informed and they will carry further investigations,” the officer added.
