In the last two months, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has lost two more senior doctors to the private sector.
Dr N.P. Gupta, head of urology and Dr Rajiv Gupta, associate professor in the
department of medicine have resigned to work in the private hospitals.
With Dr R. Gupta’s resignation, the total number of doctors quitting the unit of rheumatoid arthritis in department of medicine has gone up to three in the last one year.
Dr Ashok Kumar and Dr Rohini Handa had resigned in 2009, and with Dr Gupta’s resignation, the strength of the department is down to one.
“Everybody is going under VRS (Voluntary Retirement Scheme). Everybody has the right to leave,” said Dr R.C. Deka, director, AIIMS, who initially denied reports of doctors quitting the institute citing professional discontent.
“I have no more comments on the same,” he added.
In September last year, three senior doctors had resigned from department of neurosciences, followed by Dr K.K. Handa, professor in the ENT department, in October.
All cited professional dissatisfaction and administrative interference as the reasons for their resignations.
“Till the administration does not improve the living and working condition of doctor at AIIMS the influx will continue,” said Dr Manoj Singh, president Faculty Association of AIIMS (FAIIMS).
“Earlier AIIMS used to be the most desirable place to work for medical professionals but today the scenario has completely changed, with private sector hospitals offering good working conditions and competitive pay packages,” he added.
According to Dr Singh, some hospitals like Sir Gangaram offer academic programmes at postgraduate levels, which satiates the academic needs in teaching doctors.
With two more senior doctors quitting AIIMS, the total number of doctors resigning the premier institute has gone up to 10 in the last one year
