The city on Wednesday reported two more cases of chikungunya, taking the total number of people affected with the vector-borne disease to 43.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is still waiting for the laboratory report of two suspected cases.

As many as seven cases of chikungunya were reported last year by this time. The officials from the MCD's health department fear community-based transmission of the disease within the city, as only one person out of the 43 has travelled to south India.

"The number of cases could be higher, as not all cases are getting reported," said an official from MCD's health department.

Meanwhile, 35 dengue cases were also reported on Wednesday, taking the total number of cases to 5,869.

So far, eight people have died of the disease. Health experts attribute rise in the number of cases to incessant monsoon rain and large-scale construction across the city in the wake of the recently concluded Commonwealth Games.
