The two-year-old battered baby left her home for about two months - the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Trauma Centre - around 4.15pm on Friday after post-mortem.
The autopsy, which was delayed by a few hours, was conducted after the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) ordered that the baby's body should be handed over her mother Munni Khatoon. It was conducted between 2pm and 3pm.
Khatoon received the infant's body in the presence of representatives of the Delhi Waqf board, Delhi Police and officials from Delhi government departments. “Nothing major was found in the autopsy. Heart attack was the immediate cause of her death and injuries to the brain seem to have led to it. The tissues have been sent for test," said a senior doctor from the department of Forensic Science at AIIMS.
According to the CWC order, the Delhi department for women and child development bore the funeral expenses of the baby, who was buried at the Feroze Shah Kotla burial ground near Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg.
All efforts by doctors at the Trauma Centre to revive the baby failed. She suffered the third heart attack at 9pm on Thursday. Doctors declared her dead at 9.40pm. The toddler had been undergoing treatment at the hospital since January 18. She was admitted to the hospital with severe head injuries, fractured arms, bite marks and cheeks branded with hot iron.
