Two 19-year-old cousins were chased and stabbed to death by a group of men in Rohini’s Japanese Park, where dozens of young couples had gathered to celebrate Valentine’s Day on Tuesday evening.
The deceased were identified as cousins, Ankush and Ashu.
The brutal murder happened despite police presence outside the park and patrolling by more than six private security guards inside. The Japanese Park is a favourite haunt for young lovers and criminals, when it is not being used for political rallies.
Police sources said they were investigating the possibility of a love triangle behind the murders, though MN Tiwari, DCP (Rohini) remained unavailable for a comment.
Police said three youths had been detained and a pair of female slippers had been recovered from the spot of crime adding fuel to the love triangle angle.
The detained youths included the victims’ neighbour and friend who had allegedly lured the two brothers out of their homes in Karala village to the park.

Ankush’s brother, Sahil, alleged that the cousins were called out of their homes around 6pm on Tuesday by their neighbour, who was also their friend. “Ankush told me that he was going to Begumpur, but he was tricked into visiting Japanese Park instead,” Sahil said.
A senior police officer said the incident came to light when someone from the park called up the police control room to inform about two youths being stabbed by a group.
The policemen deployed outside the park immediately rushed to the spot and saw the brothers lying in pools of blood, a few metres from each other. “It appears as if the victims were stabbed while they were running. Since the victims were well-built, it must have required more than one person to kill them,” said an investigator.
“A pair of sandals was found next to the bodies. We suspect this was the sandals belonged to a woman who was at the center of the incident,” the investigator added. The recovery of a mobile phone, apart from those belonging to the victims, has also helped the police in cementing this theory.
The victims were rushed to the nearby Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital where they were declared brought dead. “The victims had five stab wounds each. The nature of the wounds indicated that the men were stabbed out of hatred,” the officer added.
Japanese Park is not new to crimes and sees little police presence, locals alleged. The park is a hotbed for people who harass women and blackmail couples who come there to spend some alone time, they added. A security guard said he was thrashed by a group of men a few days ago when he objected to a man harassing some women.
