The undersea cable cut near Palermo, Italy, may affect some small BPOs in India. “Only those BPOs who have not taken redundancy may be affected. All big BPOs have redundancy, therefore, they aren’t affected at all,” said Raman Roy, chairman and managing director, Quattro BPO Solutions.

According to a Tata Communications spokesperson, “three submarine cable systems connecting Asia and Europe experienced cuts in the Mediterranean due to seismic activity”.

Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) said its broadband subscribers haven’t reported any impact on service quality. “International calls are also not affected. We have redundancy,” said its CMD R.S.P. Sinha.

Reliance, which has a stake in Flag Europe Asia, one of the cables that was cut, said in a statement: “Reliance Globalcom has alerted a maintenance ships in the Mediterranean; it is on its way to commence repairs, subject to weather conditions. The repairs are expected to be completed during the next week.”
