In an alleged case of road rage, unidentified assailants used bricks lying on the road near northeast Delhi to strike a 40-year-old bus driver to death late on Friday night.
The incident was reported from the Idgah Road near Seemapuri area at 2:40 am. The victim has been identified as Kala Sheikh, said a senior Delhi Police officer from the investigation team.
Sheikh, along with bus conductor Shahid, was on his way home when four men in a Toyota Qualis tried to overtake the bus.
“According to the conductor, the gang of assailants looked drunk and tried to overtake their bus several times. They were still behind the bus when Sheikh, a father of seven children, slowed down on reaching his usual parking spot near his house in Old Seemapuri area,” the officer said.
Police said the assailants quietly parked their vehicle some distance away from Sheikh’s bus and waited for him to get down.
“As soon as Sheikh alighted, the assailants pounced on him and started assaulting him with bricks that they had picked up from the road.”
During the ensuing scuffle, one of the assailants hit Sheikh on the chest with a brick. They fled after he fell on the ground and started spitting blood, the officer added.
According to police, Shahid tried to stop the men but failed. He then rushed Sheikh to the GTB Hospital, where the latter was declared brought dead.
“We have registered a case of murder at the Seemapuri Police Station and investigating the matter. Various teams have been constituted to nab the culprits,” the officer added.
