Chief minister Mayawati's move to push for three new states carved from in Uttar Pradesh ahead of its assembly election has prompted the Congress raise the pitch for the second State Reorganisation Commission (SRC).

Though the party couldn't reach a consensus on a second SRC to resolve Telangana issue, Mayawati's plan has made the Congress ask for the state panel ahead of the UP election.

"We will fulfil whatever we have said in our manifesto. We want a SRC to be set up as the issue is not limited to only Uttar Pradesh. Congress does not decide keeping in mind a region or the state but the whole country," party spokesperson Rashid Alvi said on Wednesday.

Congress general secretary in-charge of UP Digvijaya Singh said: "Our policy regarding the bifurcation of the state is very open. We demand the formation of a SRC before the division of the UP."

But the Congress seems to be undecided on the tricky issue of Telangana even while mooting for a SRC. When asked if the new SRC would also have Telangana in its ambit, Alvi said, "The AICC-in charge of Andhra Pradesh is seized of the matter. You should ask him."

The first SRC had submitted its report in 1955 led to the formation of Gujarat and other linguistic states.
