Delhi University student Radhika Tanwar, 20, was shot by a ‘psychotic stalker’, who before gunning her down on March 8 had followed her thrice to kill her to avenge the humiliation of being beaten up for stalking her, police said Friday.
Teams have been sent to western Uttar Pradesh to nab Vijay alias Ram Singh.
The breakthrough came after two of Vijay's friends, who police say harboured him and helped him leave the Capital two days after the murder, were nabbed late Thursday. Tabrez and Ashraf (both use one name) were detained in western Uttar Pradesh's Sitapur area.
“He held a grudge against Tanwar after he was beaten up for harassing her and used to tell his friends that whenever he'll get an opportunity, he will take revenge,” HGS Dhaliwal, deputy commissioner of police (South), told mediapersons. He had left for Mumbai and returned to the Capital 45 days ago, the officer said.
Vijay had followed Tanwar at least thrice, allegedly with an intention to kill her.
A resident of Sitapur in Uttar Pradesh's Vishwan district, 450km from Delhi, Vijay has a “psychotic streak” and was stalking women in his village as well, the officer said.
After he shot Tanwar, Vijay went to his friend's place in Rohini and told them he was in a scuffle, said the police. He stayed the night with them and told them the next morning that he had killed Tanwar, said Dhaliwal.
With the murder causing outrage across the city, the trio decided to go to a friend in Gurgaon. They asked another friend for help but he refused.
"Tabrez and Ashraf left for Sitapur, leaving Vijay on his own. We are on Vijay's trail and expect to arrest him soon," said Dhaliwal.
