Denying any deliberate attempt to malign the parents of Aarushi in connection with her unsolved murder, the Uttar Pradesh Police have sought to pass the buck to the media, saying the information on progress of investigation was shared under media pressure.
In an affidavit filed in response to a public interest litigation by advocate Surat Singh, Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police, Inspector General of Police (Meerut Range) and the state government said the police gave statements under media pressure to clear the doubts raised by the media in the case.
The 14-year-old girl was found murdered at her Noida home on May 17. A day later, the body of Talwars’ domestic help Hemraj was found on the terrace of their house. Police arrested her father and kept him in custody for 50 days before declaring him innocent.
Petitioner Surat Singh had accused the Uttar Pradesh Police of acting in the most irresponsible manner and deliberately leaking selective information to the press during the investigation. He had also raised the issue of intrusive reporting by the media.
