Severe cold wave across north India claimed 120 lives even as night-long snowfall in the upper reaches of Kashmir cut off the valley from the country for the second day.

Severe cold wave across north India claimed 120 lives even as night-long snowfall in the upper reaches of Kashmir cut off the valley from the country for the second day on Monday.

UP accounted for 110 deaths while Bihar reported eight and Haryana two.

Around 40 people died across UP since Sunday night as intense conditions continued to grip the state, officials said in Lucknow.

Traffic on the 300-km Srinagar-Jammu national highway remained suspended while poor visibility at Srinagar international airport affected air operations this morning.

In Himachal Pradesh, the higher reaches experienced heavy snowfall, and rains lashed the lower areas, breaking the long, dry spell and bringing cheer to farmers ahead of Rabi sowing. A large number of tourists thronged Kufri (pic), near Shimla.
