Two days after he was brutally stabbed to death, 20-year-old Shobhit Modi’s killer remained elusive. But the Delhi Police said they now suspect that his assailant might be from his large network of friends from his previous school.

They said it was possible that the killer was motivated by a warped anger over Modi’s current relationship with a woman.

“We are working on specific leads and are confident of cracking the case by the middle of the coming week,” said a senior police officer on Sunday. “Questioning Modi’s friends and acquaintances and recreating the incident several times is taking some time,” he said.

So far, investigators have questioned at least 50 suspects after Modi, a second-year IT engineering student at Manav Rachna University in Faridabad, staggered to his Vasant Kunj colony gate with four stab wounds in his stomach on Friday evening.

Working on leads after questioning at least 30 of Modi’s friends and relatives, investigators decided to pay another visit to his school on Monday.
