Former Union Minister and Congress veteran V C Shukla, who suffered bullet injuries in the deadly may 25 Naxal attack that eliminated Chhattisgarh party leadership, died Tuesday at 2.38 pm at Medanta Medicity Hospital after developing multi-organ failure.

“His condition was very critical and had been on dialysis throughout,” said Dr Yatin Mehta, chairperson of the institute of critical care and anesthesiology at the hospital.

Shukla’s body will be airlifted to Raipur where it will be kept at the Chattisgarh Pradesh Congress Bhavan on Wednesday for people to pay their last respects, said a party worker.

Chhattisgarh declared a three-day state mourning as a mark of respect for Shukla whose death was condoled by President Pranab Mukherjee, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi and other leaders.
