Vikaspuri-Meera Bagh elevated road to be thrown open this Sunday

Commuting to outer Delhi is set to get easier with the Delhi government set to inaugurate another section of the elevated corridor between Vikaspuri and Wazirabad.
A 3.6-km section, between Vikaspuri and Meera Bagh, will be thrown open for public this Sunday.
The 22-km signal-free Vikaspuri-Wazirabad project was divided into four parts — Mangolpuri to Madhuban Chowk (completed), Madhuban Chowk to Mukarba Chowk (completed), Vikaspuri to Meera Bagh (scheduled to be inaugurated on July 24) and a stretch from Mukarba Chowk to Wazirabad, which is still under construction and is expected to be ready by the end of this year.
“There are four intersections on this stretch and after the inauguration the entire stretch will become signal free. There are already two flyovers and these four elevated roads will make commuting easy,” said a senior official of PWD, which has constructed the project.
Work on road widening, footpath and cycle tracks are in progress on the entire stretch. “We obtained permission of forest department for felling 785 trees for the project in a phased manner,” he added
According to PWD, there were some religious encroachments on the stretch that delayed construction. Also there was encroachment by shops and residences for which notice for removal had to be issued.
The Delhi government is now planning to construct more Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridors to facilitate and encourage use of public transport. Delhi’s first BRT, between Moolchand and Ambedkar Nagar, had to be scrapped after a huge public outcry over the traffic snarls it triggered on one of the busiest stretches in the city.
Senior transport department officials said they have identified six corridors where BRT may be implemented. Government sources said a detailed study will be done to ensure that BRT is implemented on stretches where there is a high number of bus users and where adequate road width is available.
