Call them undergraduate courses with a difference. The popularity of B.A. (Vocational Studies) offered by College of Vocational Studies (CVS) is increasing every year.
DU started the college in 1972 as an experiment to promote vocational studies as full-fledged bachelor’s level courses. Today they are much sought after by a sizeable chunk of students who want to hone their soft skills in different areas. Last year alone the college received as many 9,000 forms for a mere 350 seats. The total number of seats in the seven courses has increased to 413 since.
Dr. Inder Jeet, principal of CVS, “In the last few years the courses we offered have become very popular. The best part about them is at the end of three years a student gets a Bachelor’s degree. The courses are market-oriented and this also appeals to many applicants.” The college offers seven vocational courses ranging from Tourism, Human Resource Management and Marketing and Retail Business. The new and revised structure of BA (VS) programme was implemented in 2005. The programme includes a total of 12 courses over a three-year period with four courses taught and examined each year.
The curriculum also includes the study of languages other than English and Hindi and also computer fundamentals. Relevant complementary courses from BA and B.Com programme are also included in the syllabus.
But getting into these colleges is not that easy as the cutoffs are rising every year. The most popular courses offered by CVS are Human Resource Management, Tourism and Marketing Management and Retail Business. “Every year we are seeing a rise in the cutoffs for these courses as awareness about these courses grows. If we keep the cutoffs as the criteria for popularity then the current craze among students is for Tourism and HRM. Both the industries are booming and the market is filled with jobs,” added Inder Jeet.
