Residents of South and South West Delhi have been suffering from water shortage for the past few days.

This, a day after Delhi Jal Board (DJB) said that some areas will now get water once a day as opposed to twice a day.

“The water supply was always erratic but it is worse this week. On Sunday there was no water at all. On Monday, we got water only for 20 minutes,” said Madhu Sharma, a resident of Vasant Kunj's Sector A, Pocket B.

For the residents of Vasant Vihar as well, things were quite difficult.

“The blocks at a higher level suffer the most as water does not reach here. The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) officials wait for the last minute to refill the reservoir. As a result, water fails to reach the blocks that lie at the periphery,” said S P Sud.

The DJB officials say that the shortage is due to lack of town planning.

“We accept that there is water shortage in tail end areas. The main reason for this chronic problem is unplanned growth,” said RK Garg, member, water works, DJB.

In Dwarka, water shortage has always been an issue but the situation has become grimmer since the onset of summer.

“Regular water supply is non existent since the summer started. We have been getting water once in three days,” says Kanika Vashisht, a resident of sector 24.

The Delhi Jal Board’s decision to restrict water supply is here to stay.

“The demand is more than the availability and thus we will have to supply water once a day as opposed to twice a day. But the supply will be for a longer duration. We want the people to be prepared for these changes,” said B M Dhaul, chief engineer (south), DJB.

The areas where water supply will be restricted to once a day are Greater Kailash, Vasant Vihar, Vasant Kunj and East of Kailash.
