Bharatiya Janata Party president Dr Harsh Vardhan has won from his Krishna Nagar constituency thrice in 15 years, and according to him, each time the margin has been double the previous one.

It does not take much, he said. “All through my political career, I have maintained only one action—to greet each and every person with folded hands and a smiling face.”

“Our vote is only for Doctor sa’ab. Whenever we needed him, he has always been there for us,” said Parkash Khetarpal, a resident of Ram Nagar extension.

A major chunk of his vote bank is disappointed with the present government and has pinned high hopes on him.

“See how unhygienic this place is. I really hope Dr Vardhan and BJP bring the much required change,” said Sushil Kapoor from Chander Nagar.

One of the biggest hurdles for Vardhan is to match up to the level set by A.K. Walia, as some areas like Sarojini park have become part of his constituency post delimitation.

“Dr Walia has done a lot for the area and we expect the same from him (Vardhan),” said Raj Kumar Kaushik, a resident of Sarojini Park.

Opposite Vardhan stands Congress party’s woman candidate Deepika Khullar. And as much as he would like to deny the impact of womanpower, chances are, it might work against him.

The bent of female voters towards Khullar was quite conspicuous. “Deepikaji is like an elder sister. Her presence is a reassuring one for us,” said Manisha Goyal, a Geeta Colony resident.

“I start with a handful of people but by the time I reach the meeting venue, there is a huge crowd, which says a lot about the support I have got,” Khullar said.

Dr Harsh Vardhan is aware of all these challenges, but it does not perturb him. “I assure the people of my constituency their problems will be heard and solved once we come into power.”
