Delhiites on Wednesday faced morning chill as the Capital recorded the coldest day of the season with minimum temperature dropping to 5.2 degree Celsius, three degrees below normal.

The coming days are not expected to be any better with the India Meteorological Department predicting lower temperatures.

"The minimum temperature is expected to go down further by 1-2 degrees in the coming week," said the weatherman.

Fog also made reappearance on Wednesday morning as fog cover enveloped the city. The visibility dropped to 500 metres in the moderate fog.

"Shallow fog is expected in the coming few days as well. The temperature will be between 23 degrees and 6 degrees Celsius," on IMD official said.

"Getting up in the morning and getting my daughter ready for school was almost impossible. She just did not want to get up in the cold," said Reena Pandey, a housewife who lives in Mayur Vihar.

The day temperature on Wednesday, on the other hand, was higher than normal. The city recorded a maximum of 24.4 degrees, which is a degree above what is expected at this time of the year.

"When I got out of the house in the morning it was quite cold and I was wearing many layers of clothes but as the day progressed I had to take off my sweater as the day became uncomfortably warm," said Anchal Singh, a student.

On Tuesday the minimum temperature was 6.8 degrees Celsius while maximum was 21.7 degrees.

The mercury had earlier dipped to 6.2 degrees Celsius on December 11.

Overnight temperatures have been hovering around 7-8 degrees Celsius for the past fortnight and the sharp decline was recorded for the first time this season.
