Where to head for crash course in road safety

We bring you a first-hand experience of a revamped TrafficTraining Park in Delhi.

They may know sport, movies and music, but how many kids are cognizant of traffic rules? In an encouraging and edifying initiative to help students get well-versed with road safety guidelines, the Delhi Traffic Police has tied up with 400 schools across the Capital.

To facilitate this education, five Traffic Training Parks are established in the city. To get a first-hand experience of these recently-revamped parks, we visited one such centre at Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg. Joint commissioner of police, Traffic, Anil Shukla, tells us, “Traffic education needs to be imparted to young minds. Our road safety cell has tied up with several schools in the Capital. We wish that these parks can be used on a regular basis.” Vjay Kumar, assistant sub-inspector and in-charge of the facility we visited, told us, “It is amazing to be a part of this push. We discuss the good and the bad — be it the use of helmets and seat belts, or the hazards of aggressive overtaking and drunken driving.”

These training parks are also frequented by drivers from Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC), Delhi National Security Guard (NSG), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and other paramilitary forces from across the country.

There are several features that are a part of these training centres, where mock roads and traffic lights have been set up. Women aged 18 and above can learn driving a two-wheeler, that too free of cost. Plans are also underway to introduce the same for men. At two such parks (Punjabi Bagh and Pragati Maidan), one can also experience a live four-wheeler simulator training. One other feature of the parks is to engage audience via a film on road rules. The facilities are also open to general public in visiting hours.
