Serious efforts are afoot to restrict use of private cars in the Capital to curb road congestion.

Apart from a steep hike in parking charges that has already been mooted, a stiff congestion fee is also at the drawing board stage.

A high-level 11-member task force headed by Chief Secretary constituted by the Delhi High Court on February 10 has
discussed these issues in its meeting on April 2.

The next meeting will be held on May 1.

Government Standing Counsel Najmi Waziri told a bench headed by Justice Vikramjit Sen the task force is exploring questions pertaining to road traffic with the objective of minimising congestion.

Stiff congestion fee
The court had proposed a “stiff congestion fee” on the lines of London where it is levied on private cars entering certain parts of the city.

“The government has to consider all options, including imposing stringent restrictions on the use and movement of private cars in certain congested areas of the city,” the court had said.

The task has been entrusted to a Special Task Force (STF) comprising officials from the Delhi Government, Delhi Police, MCD and DDA mandated to deal with problems faced by road traffic in Delhi.

If the movement of heavy vehicles like trucks can be restricted and slow-moving vehicles such as cycle rickshaws and horse carts can be restricted, it can be made applicable to cars too, the court said.
