A 32-year-old woman reportedly tried to scare her alcoholic husband after a fight by pouring kerosene on herself and lighting a match.

But she ended up with critical burn injuries on Saturday morning, police said.

Police said her husband was also injured while trying to save her. Both the husband and wife are now hospitalised.

The incident happened in Anand Parbat in central Delhi on Saturday morning, when the couple was home along with their two children.

"Asha poured kerosene on herself after an argument with her husband Ugrasen over his drinking habit. Just to scare her husband, she poured kerosene and lit a match. Ugrasen tried to save her but he too got injured in the process," a senior police officer said.

She is admitted to hospital with 95% burns while her husband has 20% burns, he said.

"Asha is very critical while her husband is out of danger," the police officer added.

Their children are currently with Asha’s brother. The couple were married for the last 11 years. Ugrasen had set up a hosiery unit at his home.

The police have begun investigation in the case. The police recovered the body of the victim after three months.
