A 33-year-old woman died after she fell from the seventh floor of the OPD ward at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Thursday. The incident occurred at 12.05 pm. Eyewitnesses who rushed to the site after they heard a thud said it was a case of instant death.

Babita Gautam was a resident of B-137 in Chattarpur Enclave- Part II and was undergoing treatment for hypertension for the last two years.

Her uncle claims she was a victim of domestic violence.

“Problems started brewing after two months of her wedding in November 2003, when her husband Shivlal and sister-in-law started demanding huge sums of money for the family business,” said Prem Singh, her uncle.

“Babita was embarrassed of asking money from us, as she was aware of her family's financial condition. Her husband would often abuse her and beat her. Six months ago, she had deep gashes on her forearm and she told us her husband had tried to kill her,” he said.

On being asked if the matter was reported to the police, Babita’s family said they did not lodge an official complaint after Babita’s husband promised such incidents would never happen again.

Shivalal’s mobile phone was switched off all day and he could not be reached for

comments.

While the police are maintaining it was a case of suicide, the victim’s family is not ruling out foul play.

A postmortem would be conducted on Friday. An SDM enquiry has been initiated into the case.
