The body of a woman, in her mid-twenties, was found stuffed inside an iron box at the Anand Vihar Metro station's entrance on Wednesday morning.
Police said the body was decomposed and yet to be identified. A mangalsutra was found on the body, suggesting she was married, the cops claimed.
The woman's right hand had a tattoo that read "PK". Her neck had a mark, indicating she may have been strangulated with a rope or was hanged by her neck.
The police suspect the woman may have been murdered elsewhere and the iron box with her body brought on a roadways bus.
Around 10.30 am, a senior police officer said, a passerby spotted an unclaimed the blue iron box and raised an alarm. People thought the box contained explosives and a safe distance from it. They even stopped other passengers — entering and exiting the Anand Vihar Metro station — from getting close to the box.
A team from the ISBT Anand Vihar police post cordoned off the area. A forensic team along with officers of the crime investigation unit broke open the locked box to find the body.
"We were shocked to see a woman's body inside the box. The body emanated a foul smell," said Hare Ram, a porter.
The body was sent to a government hospital for autopsy. Photographs of the body along with her physical descriptions and the box were uploaded on ZIPNET (Zonal Integrated Police Network) website.
Ajay Kumar, deputy commissioner of police (east), said a case had been registered at the Madhu Vihar police station.
"The woman's body will be preserved in the hospital's mortuary for the next 72 hours for identification. If nobody claims the body, an autopsy will be conducted and its last rites conducted," said Kumar.
"The actual cause of death can be ascertained only after the autopsy report. We are examining footage of the 10 CCTV cameras installed in the premises," an officer said.
Sources in police said that ISBT Anand Vihar has witnessed similar incidents in the past as it has porous entry and exit points that are always over-crowded with passengers. Also there was no checking of luggage at the bus terminus.
