Woman killed, five injured in Akshardham car accident
The friends had gone to Shipra Mall in Ghaziabad. They were on their way home when the car they were travelling in toppled in Akshardham.
A 26-year-old woman was killed and five others were seriously injured when the car they were travelling in toppled after ramming into a truck in east Delhi’s Akshardham on Saturday night.
Shalini Rana (26) was returning to her PG in Laxmi Nagar with five of her friends, Pooja Tomar (23), Pooja Pathak (22), Priya (23), Ajay (25) and Bhola (24), at the time of the accident. Shalini died on the spot. The others are recuperating at the hospital, police said.
The friends had gone to Shipra Mall in Ghaziabad and Ajay, who was at the wheel, was to drop the women back at their PG, the police said.
“They left from Ghaziabad and were on their way to east Delhi when Ajay lost control of the vehicle and hit a truck on the roadside. The car overturned and skid for more than a 100 metres, before coming to a halt. The impact totally crushed the car’s roof and both left doors,” a senior police officer said.
Passersby informed the police. “We had to use gas cutters to pierce through the doors and pull the occupants out. Shalini sustained severe head injuries and died on the spot, while the others were rushed to the hospital. Pooja is said to be critical,” the police said.
A case of rash and negligent driving has been registered and the police are waiting for Ajay to be fit for statement.
Meanwhile, a couple was injured in Akshardham, when their cycle was hit by a speeding car on Friday night. The police are yet to identify the car that hit the cycle. The couple was admitted at a hospital and is said to be stable.
