The police arrested a suspect from a South Delhi locality nearly two days after a woman was raped inside the Deer Park near Hauz Khas Village.
The accused, in his 20s, has been identified as Raja alias Jhandel and he works at a small restaurant located near the village, Ishwar Singh, DCP (South), told HT. Police had said on Monday they had identified the main accused in the case.
“After intense investigation, the accused has been positively identified. Various teams are raiding his probable hideouts and results are expected soon,” the police had said.
Police have recovered the iPhone that he had snatched from the victim while fleeing after the crime. He had also snatched her wallet, but dropped it while escaping.
The wallet had been found from the crime spot soon after the rape was reported to the police around 2.45 am on Sunday.
The DCP expressed confidence that they had enough evidence to link him to the crime. Police suspect the blood from his head injury could be found on the victim’s clothes.
“We will file the charge sheet against him within a month,” the DCP said.
Raja, a resident of nearby Arjun Vihar, used to frequently visit the Hauz Khas area at night, police said.
While no previous criminal case against him has emerged so far, police are questioning him to ascertain if he was involved in similar crimes earlier.
Raja was identified through a sketch based on the description provided by the victim.
Around 25 teams consisting of three-four members each were tasked with identifying and arresting the accused.
Police said the they were on the lookout of the suspect with a head injury as the victim had told them that she had hit the rapist with a stone during the assault.
The victim, who lives in a South Delhi locality, has a part time job and is pursuing a course in spoken English. She was looking for a cab in Hauz Khas with her cousin sister on Saturday night when two men approached them and offered to drop them home.
While walking towards the car, one of the men asked the victim to accompany him to Deer Park, saying there was a dry lake he wanted to show her, RP Upadhyay, Joint CP (South-Eastern Range) had said after the incident was reported. They scaled the wall of the park and walked to the lake where the accused allegedly raped her twice.
After the man escaped with her wallet and phone, the woman walked and found some cops manning a picket and narrated her ordeal.
The woman was sent for a medical examination and her statement was recorded.
