The body of an unidentified woman was found in an open drain in southeast Delhi’s Amar Colony on Saturday morning. The lower portion of the body was missing.

Police said that the body was stuffed in a black travel bag and dumped in an open drain near a bus stand on Captain Gaur Marg near Garhi village T-point.

Officials said the condition of the body suggested that the woman must have died at least 24 hours ago. It also seemed that portions of the body were eaten by animals, police said. The woman’s hands were joined in a prayer position with a rope. The lower portion of the body had apparently been chopped off.

“The woman appears to be in the mid-30s and has a wheatish complexion. She had a religious thread on one of her wrists and was wearing a red kurta,” said a senior police official.

Police said that a PCR call was received around 10.30 am after a resident of the area went near the drain to relieve himself and spotted the bag. The man thought that it might contain some cash and valuables. When he went closer, he realised there was a foul smell emanating from the bag and informed the police.

A case under section 302 (punishment for murder) of Indian Penal Code has been registered against an unknown person at the Amar Colony police station.

Police officials said that locals are being questioned to ascertain if they saw any suspicious activity in the area and efforts are on to identify the woman.

“We are going through reports of women who went missing in the past one week. Prima facie, it appears that the woman was murdered at another place and later her body was dumped here. Further investigation is on,” the officer said.

This is the fourth case of an unidentified body being found in last nine days across the national capital.
