Six family members of a man, including his pregnant sister-in-law, were injured after they were assaulted by the family of the woman he eloped with at Raju Extension near Old Palam Road in southwest Delhi on Saturday morning.
The 21-year-old woman, who stays in his neighbourhood, had eloped with him two days before the incident and had called her family members to inform them about their marriage.
Infuriated, the woman's family members along with their relatives went to the man's house and beat up his family members.
The injured persons were admitted at a nearby hospital where doctors told the police that the condition of the pregnant woman was serious, though stable. On the basis of a complaint lodged by the husband of the pregnant woman, a case of trespass and voluntarily causing hurt was registered at the Dwarka north police station, said a police officer.
According to the officer, the complaint was lodged by one Surendra Singh who told the police that his younger brother Krishna had eloped with a woman living in their neighbourhood on January 24 without informing anyone in his family.
"Singh told us that they were unaware of his brother's plan, hence they were making efforts to trace Krishna as well as the woman. On the other hand, the girl's family members suspected the involvement of Krishna, as he too was missing from his house. They lodged a case of abduction and suspected Krishna's involvement," said the police officer.
Two days after they eloped, the woman called her mother and informed them that she had married Krishna. The woman's mother immediately informed the investigating officer (IO) who was investigating the abduction case and he in turn informed the woman's father about the matter.
"The woman's family members and her relatives arrived at Krishna's house and started beating up his family members before leaving the house. The injured included the complainant, his mother Santosh, wife Bharti, sister Latesh, and two brothers - Gaurav and Suraj. We are probing into the matter," added the officer.
