Delhi Police have arrested a 35-year-old woman who used to stop four-wheelers to take lift and later snatch belongings of the car owners. Police said the woman belongs to a tribe ‘Pernies’ and they suspect there are more women who are involved in this kind of snatching. The arrest was made from Dwarka in southwest Delhi following a complaint filed by one Rajesh.
Rajesh alleged that a woman had fled with his chain after he gave her lift in his car in Dwarka. Rajesh, who works as chef in Wyndham Hotel, said that on Monday morning when he reached near Muthut Ground T-point a woman signalled him for lift. Soon after he stopped the car, she jumped into the car and snatched the chain.
Police said she had targeted people like this earlier also but the victims generally did not complain fearing disrepute.
The woman, identified as Mantesh alias Revti, was earlier booked in 1998 for her alleged involvement in an immoral trafficking case.
She told police that she targets only those travelling in four-wheelers. “If there is any resistance from the driver, she threatens to get them framed in false case of harassment or rape. She chose the area of Dwarka because of its posh locality and of rich people,” AK Ojha, DCP (southwest) said. The investigation team scanned past records of dozens of woman snatchers involved in snatching cases all over Delhi and zeroed-in on a group of women belonging to ‘Pernies’ tribe.
“On a secret information, Mantesh was arrested and the gold chain was recovered from her possession,” Ojha added. Further investigations are on in the case.
