The country’s oldest airline doesn’t want to appear old when the brand new Terminal 3 of Delhi airport opens next month.
Air India is on a recruitment drive. It’s looking for more than 500 new employees — most of them should be no older than 25 years, so as to become the airline’s young face at the new terminal; it would be inaugurated on July 3 by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
Air India would be one of the first to shift to the swank and massive Terminal 3; it would also be one of the biggest airlines to operate from there. Most of the airline staff at the new terminal will consist of freshly hired personnel.
The new recruits would be hired on a three-year contract with customer service agents not older than 25 years and senior personnel not older than 40. Though existing airline staff would also work at the new terminal, the passengers would see the younger brethren first.
The recruitment is being done by an airline subsidiary Air India-Singapore Airport Terminal Services. Walk-in interviews are being conducted at a hotel in Mahipalpur.
“We want to provide world-class service in the new, world-class terminal,” said a senior Air India official who didn’t wish to be named. “The focus is on the customer and the service should start right from the terminal. T3 is the most modern terminal in the country and we want to have equally smart staff.”
“Most of our manpower is 50 plus who don’t have energy levels and motivation required for quality customer service,” he said. “That is why we are taking younger people. They will be given good salaries but they will work on contract basis, to ensure continued performance.”
