Your house may be the biggest breeding ground for dengue causing mosquitoes.
Despite spending lakhs of rupees on generating awareness about dengue, more than 700 hundred homes in the city are found to be breeding dengue causing larvae every day.
Domestic breeding checkers find larvae in 188 homes in North Delhi, 350 homes in South and about 30 homes in East Delhi every day, said officials of the three municipal corporations. These larvae are mostly found in flower pots and overhead tanks.
The latest data shows that compared to 2011, the number of homes where mosquito breeding was found has increased by 13,440, taking the total to 10,1306 so far. Of these, legal notices have been sent to 84,983 homes.
The opposition Congress, however, criticized the municipal corporations for failing to fill vacant posts of entomologists and assistant malaria officers who can keep a better check on the spread of dengue.
In North Corporation, 61 out of 96 posts of senior malaria inspectors and 244 out of 360 posts of malaria inspectors are lying vacant.
On Wednesday, the city reported 39 new cases of dengue, taking the total number to 1,288 this season. Out of these, 11 people are from outside Delhi.
Three children have succumbed to the disease so far, according to the official data reported by the civic agencies. South Delhi is the worst affected with 492 cases reported to date this year, followed by north Delhi with 431 cases and east Delhi with 317 cases.
Hospitals in the city continue to get 5-10 dengue positive cases daily and most of them claimed to have reported more than 100 cases already this season, hinting that the total number could be way ahead of the official dengue figures.
“It does not matter what private hospitals claim. We only accept ELISA-based NS1 antigen confirmed dengue test result to register dengue cases. The rest are unreliable methods,” said a senior official from the health department of south Delhi Municipal Corporation.
