Have you wanted to buy your child a toy chimpanzee or a giraffe replica for after visiting the zoo? In a few months from now, you can look forward to buying such mementoes from a souvenir shop at the Delhi Zoo.
As a part of the facelift programme ahead of the Commonwealth Games, authorities at the National Zoological Park, popular as Delhi Zoo, are planning this souvenir shop along with a clean cloakroom, improved ticketing arrangements and an ATM.
The plan includes setting up a proper cloakroom instead of the present temporary arrangement. The souvenir shop would stock items/mementoes from the zoo, the Ministry of Environment and Forests, and publications related to wildlife.
The facelift programme also includes opening an ATM of Union Bank of India (zoo’s official banker) near the gate.
The improvement plans do not stop at the façade or the gate.
Most important is the condition of animal enclosures and animal health. Central Zoo Authority (CZA) Member Secretary B.S. Bonal said: “Our effort is to create more and more natural environment for the animals in the Delhi zoo. For example, zoo authorities have been asked to put logs and natural furniture (like shrubs and tree branches) for the animals.”
