In the first two days, the NDMC staff – horticulture, civil and sanitation – planted over 55,000 trees. On Friday, 54 NDMC schools planted around 5,000 trees while on Saturday, over 50,000 saplings were planted at many places across Central Delhi. Out of these, 10,000 are trees such as neem and gulmohar while 40,000 are ornamental ones.

According to NDMC chairman Naresh Kumar, this year the target has been set at two lakh saplings and the council will involve resident welfare associations, market associations, traders associations, diplomats from the embassies, NGOs and institutions in the drive to increase its reach.

“We are trying to increase the green cover and people from different sectors will be involved in this year’s plantation drive. The idea is to involve as many sectors as possible to spread awareness about the significance of this greening drive. We will also invite private parties such as RWAs and traders associations along with private schools,” Kumar said.

An audit by the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (ICAR) during the months of April and May for verifying the survival rate of trees planted during the past four years has shown positive results. The report, submitted on June 9, shows that in 2011-12, out of 7,449 trees planted the survival rate was 63%. In 2012-13 it was 57% while in 201314 it was 65%. In 2014-15, however, it was as high as 79%, the NDMC chairperson said.
