Delhi police nab insurance scammers
NEW DELHI: The Delhi Police arrested four men who cheated more than 500 people to the tune of over Rs 3 crore, on Tuesday. These men, operating across 33 cities, posed as insurance agents and cheated the elderly by tricking them into investing money in various lucrative insurance schemes, police said.
The arrested were operating the racket since 2012 in Delhi, they added.
Mohammad Bilal, alias Aman Verma, Ravikant Maurya, Naseem Akhter, Manish Tewari, aged between 24 and 28 years and residents of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, were arrested between September 1 and September 5 following investigation into a cheating case filed at the Ashok Vihar police station on July 31.
The complainant, Gajai Singh, a 75-year-old retired assistant engineer from the central public works department (CPWD), was duped of Rs 35 lakh between 2012 and 2016 by the accused. Vijay Singh, DCP (northwest), said the four posed as insurance agents from top companies in the country.
“They have various bank accounts opened using fake documents. They used to ask investors to deposit money in these accounts,” said Singh. The 75-year-old told the police that in October 2012, an unknown man contacted him over phone, posing as an insurance officer.
He lured the caller with various lucrative insurance schemes. Gajai was assured that he would receive 40 % returns on the investment, following which he handed over 5 cheques amounting to approximately Rs 2 lakh.
Gajai was again contacted six months later by a person who introduced himself as Aditya Narayan, a senior Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer. Gajai was told he was cheated and needed to hand over all insurance policy documents at his office in Jhandewalan, Delhi.
In four years Gajai invested rupees 34.25 lakhs through real time gross settlement (RTGS) in various accounts, police said.
