Nod for Coronation Pillar wastewater plant
NEW DELHI: The Coronation Pillar wastewater treatment plant project was approved by the Delhi Jal Board on Monday.
The project, whose feasibility and funding details were in the works for months, will be the biggest in the country with a capacity to treat 70 million gallons daily.
“The plant will cater to the sewage treatment requirement of the areas like Burari and Timarpur. The quality of treated water will be around 10 BOD, which is very high as compared to the other plants. The water can be released into the Yamuna or be used for non-drinking purposes. This plant will be one of the cheapest n the country at ` 515 crores for 70 MGD as well as single largest plant to clean Yamuna,” water minister Kapil Mishra said.
One of the reasons that the long-pending project was stuck was the non-allocation of funds.
Mishra said the Centre was supposed to release money for the project but it was taking too long.
“We decided that we will give the money and start the project. It will take around 2.5 years to complete, he said.
DJB also cleared the Mehrauli-Vasant Vihar project to deliver 24x7 water supply in the area on Monday.
SOLAR PLANT
The water utility will set up solar power generation plants on rooftops and on vacant land available with them.
The first plant is expected to generate 16MW of power.
“We are paying around Rs 8 per unit for electricity as of now. Under the new project, we will get electricity at Rs 4.96 per unit for 25 years,” Mishra said.
