A 21-year-old property dealer was killed and five others injured in an accident involving three cars at a traffic intersection, near India Gate, in the early hours on Friday.

Police said the accident took place around 1.40am on Zakir Hussain Marg-Subramania Bharti Marg traffic intersection. The deceased was identified as Deepanshu, a resident of Ashok Vihar.

The police said the accident took place when an SUV rammed into the rear left door of a speeding Audi car being driven by a woman, an advocate, heading towards India Gate from Hazrat Nizamuddin side on Zakir Hussain Marg.

Under the impact of the hit, the sedan turned left and hit another car, which was coming from Khan Market side on Subramania Bharti Marg.

While the SUV driver managed to flee from the accident spot, the front portion of the other two vehicles were badly damaged and they came to a halt after hitting the pavement. An initial probe suggests that the SUV driver had allegedly jumped the traffic signal before hitting the Audi car.

The woman, Priyanka Kakkad, had a miraculous escape as she was flung out of her car soon after the SUV hit it. However, Deepanshu who was an occupant of the Jazz car, hit by her Audi, was not so fortunate.

Police said Deepanshu was sitting in the front seat and all his fellow occupants — Saral Yadav, who was driving the Jazz car, Vikas Sharma and Vipul — were drunk.“Despite air bags, both Yadav and Deepanshu suffered serious injuries,” said a senior police officer.“We rushed the occupants of the Jazz car and rushed them to RML Hospital where Deepanshu was pronounced dead on arrival. The condition of Vipul was stated to be serious. Priyanka was also admitted at RML Hospital. She was discharged after preliminary medical attention,” said the officer. Police are scanning CCTV footage from nearby buildings to identify the SUV.
