The guesthouses in Paharganj have been issued sealing notices by the Sadar Paharganj (SP) zone of the MCD for failing to meet several criterias. Close to 100 guesthouse owners have been issued show cause notices and if the owners fail to reply within three days time, the buildings will be sealed by the MCD.
The guesthouses, which have been served notices include those that have been constructed illegally without any building plan sanctioning or are above 15 meters in height. Also, owners, who have not yet submitted their conversion charges to the MCD have also been served notices.
“There are a number of guesthouse owners who still don’t have a health licence, which is mandatory”. “We have served notices to them and if they failed to reply we will take action against them,” SP zone deputy commissioner Renu Jagdev aid.
There are approximately 400 guesthouses in Sadar Paharganj that are thronged by tourists.
The civic agency claims that though some of the guesthouses were illegal they could have regularised after paying a fee but the owners failed to come forward. The traders claim that MCD has been harassing them unnecessarily.
“We have all the requisite permissions and have submitted all our documents online too. The MCD officers are deliberately trying to create a scare among the guesthouse owners. If buildings can’t be constructed above 15 meters why didn’t they take action earlier? We will oppose this move of the MCD” Delhi Hotel Sangh general secretary Arun Gupta said.
Last month too, the civic agency had started sealing a number of guesthouses whose owners had failed to register themselves for carrying out commercial activities. The sealing drive was stalled after traders agreed to register themselves.
