11-year old Taekwondo champ crushed to death
Dhruv Nagpal, a sixth standard student of Aadharshila school, and his mother Nisha were going for private tuitions at a coaching class she ran in the neighbourhood. She was riding a scooty and he was on pillion. A speeding truck hit the two at the Parwana road in Pitampura.
A 11-year-old district taekwondo champion was crushed to death by a truck on Monday afternoon.
Dhruv Nagpal, a sixth standard student of Aadharshila school, and his mother Nisha were going for private tuitions at a coaching class she ran in the neighbourhood. She was riding a scooty and he was on pillion. A speeding truck hit the two at the Parwana road in Pitampura.
Eyewitnesses told police that while Nisha flew off the two-wheelr, her son - caught under the truck- was dragged for around 60 meters. The driver stopped the truck and was caught and handed over to the police. Nisha survived but her son died on the spot.
The driver, Rajesh Kumar, has been booked for culpable homicide.
Nisha told HT that the driver, who was caught by the locals, appeared drunk. “He could barely stand. He was drunk. He murdered my son. He apologized but that is not going to bring my son back to me.”
On Thursday, when HT visited Dhruv’s father Amit , he proudly displayed the trophies Dhruv had won in taekwondo, elocution and academics. Amit said his son wanted to be a scientist and had recently made a mini- cannon as part for his school science project.
“My son was talented and had many interests. At 11, he made a cannon, using the mixture of water and calcium carbide,” said Amit.
Amit, himself a weight-lifter told HT that his son always said he would make Amit proud by gaining the fame his father never achieved as a sports star. “My son had won gold in the district taekwondo games. For the last two years, he was also training in professional skating at an academy. I never stopped him from participating in any other sport.”
