In a bizarre incident, a 3-year-old child was run over and killed by an SUV that was being driven by a 12-year-old boy, in west Delhi on Tuesday night. Two others, including the aunt of the child, were injured in the accident.
At around 11.30 pm on Tuesday, Vivek was returning with his uncle and aunt after celebrating Janmashtami at a temple in the Mianwali area of Paschim Vihar. The Qualis came from behind and hit the child and his aunt. While the latter fell down with injuries to the leg, the three-year-old was dragged for about 50 metres. A scooterist who came in the way was also injured. When the locals stopped the SUV, they were shocked to find a 12-year-old boy at the wheels. Sitting beside him was a man, identified as the driver of the Qualis.
“My wife and my nephew were walking ahead of me as I had stopped to buy something from a roadside shop. I saw the car moving in a wayward manner. But before I could react, it had hit them,” said Subhash Kumar, the uncle. “We had brought Vivek only a month ago from Gwalior. His parents live there. We and wanted to bring him up,” he added.
The police said that the 12-year-old boy and the driver Deepak were arrested and later released on bail. “We have also filed a case under the Motor Vehicles Act against the father of the juvenile,” said Robin Hibu, DCP (west). The police said the 12-year-old had forced his driver to allow him to drive the Qualis.
