A thunderstorm on Thursday led to massive breakdown of power distribution network in Ghaziabad, hampering supply for the next six-seven days.

According to electricity department officials, Thursday’s dust storm uprooted more than 250 poles and damaged two towers each at 220KV Muradnagar and Sahibabad and the other two at 132KV Morta sub-stations.

Areas such as Indirapuram, Vaishali, Vasundhara, Ramprastha and Delta colonies will be worst affected. Officials said that these areas will witness power cuts up to 16 hours daily for at least a week till the infrastructure is restored.

In Indirapuram and Vaishali, only 8-10 hours of electricity would be supplied. Delta colonies and other trans-Hindon areas such as Rajendra Nagar, Shalimar Garden and Lajpat Nagar will get supply for 13-14 hours a day.

“This would continue for another about a week. So far, we have got alternate power supply arrangements from Noida, Muradnagar-Loni and Lal Kuan-DPH transmission lines and power is being provided to these areas on a rotational basis,” said PK Maheshwari, chief engineer (distribution), Paschimanchal Vidyut Vitaran Nigam Limited.

The distribution company said it will be able to supply only 800MVA power to the entire city against its total capacity of 1,625 MVA.

Shortage of power supply will further hit water supply in the district, where residents have already been facing acute shortage of water. The Ghaziabad municipal corporation is able to supply around 380-390MLD of water against the demand of around 504MLD.
