A 16-year-old domestic help committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan in Outer Delhi’s Vijay Vihar police station.
The girl, who went missing from her house in south Delhi’s Vasant Kunj on Friday, was brought to the police station after she was spotted roaming near Rithala Metro station on Saturday. She hanged herself inside the women’s changing room of the police station.
The police said the girl had left her house because her family were forcing her to marry her maternal uncle, who is already married. The girl had been protesting the decision but when she could not convince them otherwise, she decided to flee. A case of kidnapping was registered at the Vasant Kunj (North) police station after her family members approached the local police with a missing persons’ complaint.
The incident took place around 5pm. The girl — a Bangladeshi migrant — hanged herself from the fan at the police station using her chunni, said a police officer.
The girl was brought to the Vijay Vihar police station around 4pm by a good samaritan, who spotted her roaming alone outside the Rithala Metro station.
“The person who brought her to the police station told us that she was not giving appropriate answers to his queries. We first recorded her written statement, in which she claimed that she was not subjected to any kind of physical harassment by the man who brought her to us,” said a senior police officer.
The officers at the police station, the senior officer said, were busy contacting the Vasant Kunj (North) police station and informing her family members about her safe recovery when the girl went to the changing room on the pretext of using the toilet.
“She went inside the toilet alone but did not come out. The officers became suspicious and sent a woman constable to the changing room. She found the teenager hanging from the ceiling fan,” said the officer. He also said a woman member of an NGO, who was called for recording the girl’s statement, was present at the police station when the girl committed suicide.
The area SDM and the family members of the girl were also informed about the incident.
