A 17-year-old boy drowned in the Yamuna while immersing the idol of Goddess Durga on Monday afternoon. Police said the incident happened at 1:05 pm.

The victim has been identified as Arvind Kumar, son of Puran Singh, a resident of Narhola Village in Yamuna Khadar. Police said the boy went too deep into the river while immersing the idol, which is the customary send off for Goddess Durga.

People immediately called the fire service, which reached the spot but could only find the body by 4 pm. Police sent the body for post mortem.

Kumar was a student of a government school in the area. His father is a daily wage labourer.
