A 20-year-old sanitation worker was found dead in a swimming pool at the Chilla Sports Complex in east Delhi on Friday afternoon, police said. It was his first day on the job.
The victim, identified as Sandeep, fell into the 9-feet deep pool at the New Ashok Nagar sports complex located at 1pm. Minutes before the incident, Sandeep had been spotted cleaning the adjacent locker room with two female co-workers.
"The pool is currently closed to the public. How he got into the pool — whether he jumped into it deliberately or was pushed — are subject to investigation," said Prabhakar, deputy commissioner of police (east).
Police said Sandeep, a resident of the adjacent Trilokpuri area had left his residence at 8am. He had recently been employed at the facility after a neighbour — also employed at the sports complex — referred him to the management.
According to eyewitnesses, police said, there were at least four other persons around the swimming pool when the incident occurred. Though they were alerted by his screams — which followed the sound of a splash in the pool — they found his inert body afloat on the water surface when they tried to save him.
Authorities at the sports complex rushed Sandeep to the nearby Dharamshila hospital, where he was declared brought dead on arrival.
Though his family alleged foul play in his death, the police dismissed any such theory.
"We have registered a case of causing death due to negligence against unknown persons in the case. We are investigating it from all possible angles," DCP Prabhakar added.
