Two people, including a five-year-old boy, were killed and nine others were injured when a building collapsed in west Delhi’s Moti Nagar on Wednesday.

Police said the collapse was triggered by a compressor blast in a factory operating illegally on the lower floors of the building. The incident took place at about 7.45am near Sudarshan Park after which the locals alerted the police.

“The rescue operation was initiated almost immediately and lasted for more than nine hours. Life-detecting machines of the quick response team found three people buried under the debris. They were rescued and rushed to a nearby government hospital,” said a police official.

According to police officials, the blast occurred in the fan-making factory being operated on the ground and first floors of the building. Families living on the second floor didn’t get time to respond and were trapped.

Farhan (5), a passerby, and Anand Mishra (20), a part-time worker at the factory, succumbed to their injuries. Seven people received minor injuries and two were seriously injured.

Police sources said that the factory owner Charan Singh too sustained injuries on his hands and face. “He has a fractured hand and injuries on his face. Although he doesn’t remember the sequence of events, he said that the blast occurred the moment Mishra switched on the compressor,” said a police official.

Mishra’s family had shifted to Delhi a few months back. Mishra had been called to the factory early to complete a few pending orders. Shortly afterwards the building collapsed.

The state health minister Satyendra Jain and MLA Shiv Charan Goyal visited the accident spot.

Jain said he would apprise deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia about the development.

He issued necessary instructions to provide help to the victims. DCP (west) Pushpendra Kumar said they had registered a case of death due to negligence and culpable homicide at the Moti Nagar police station.
