A gas cylinder exploded at a house in southwest Delhi’s Dabri on Saturday, starting a fire that killed a 10-year-old boy and his mother.

The deaths of Ajay Kumar and 35-year-old Rita came on a day three more fires were reported in the city.

The boy’s father and two siblings were injured in the fire that broke out around 10.25am at their house in Mahavir Enclave in Dabri.

Two fire engines took around half an hour to douse the blaze, a fire officer said.

Sitaram and his family members lived in RZ block in Mahavir Enclave. “On Saturday morning, Sitaram’s wife was cooking food inside the kitchen when the gas cylinder exploded because of leakage. The blaze spread fast. The victims were rushed to hospitals,” said the officer.

A fire also broke out in a large parcel kept on the New Delhi railway station premises. Eight fire engines were sent to bring the fire under control.

“The fire was brought under control in an hour. Property worth several lakhs of rupees were damaged in the fire,” said the fire officer.

Another blaze in a plastic waste yard was reported from Mundka. No casualty was reported. Fire officers said they received a call around 10.40pm on Friday after which 25 fire tenders were rushed to the spot to control the fire.

The fourth incident was reported from Paharganj area of central Delhi where a Maruti car caught fire in the night and turned to ashes before the fire tender could reach the spot.
