Two personnel of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) were crushed to death and another seriously injured in a car accident near the Delhi airport on Monday.

The incident happened around 11.30am on Monday, when Inspector Ram Kishore Meena (55) and constables Ram Avtar (50) and Jaippak Thakur (50) were walking on the airport road towards Terminal 3.

This was when an Indica car, driven by a Superintendent of the Customs department rammed them, a senior police officer said.

While Meena and Ram Avtar died on the spot, Thakur escaped with injuries, after he was thrown away by the impact.

Thakur was rushed to the Safdarjung Hospital, where he is recuperating.

The Customs official, Sushil Kumar (52), has been arrested and booked under Section 304 (causing death due to negligence) of the Indian Penal Code.

"After hitting the NCB personnel, he tried to run away but was caught by bystanders and handed over to us," police said.

"We suspect that Kumar was talking on his mobile phone while driving, which led to him losing control of the car," he said. "We have seized his phone but he had already deleted all call logs."

The incident took place near the Centaur hotel, next to the office of the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS).

The NCB personnel were from Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh and had come to the capital to deposit opium in a government warehouse near the airport.

They had brought the opium from a government factory in Uttar Pradesh and had reached Delhi in a train.

"After depositing the opium, they had gone to Mahipalpur to have breakfast. They were returning to the warehouse to complete some formalities when the incident took place," the police official said.
