2 killed in ITO flyover accident

delhi Updated: Sep 01, 2011 23:09 IST

A Maruti Omni driver and his helper were killed when their speeding vehicle crashed into a stationary Mahindra dumper under the ITO flyover early on Thursday morning.

The accident took place around 3.15am, barely 50meters from the IP Estate police station.

The deceased have been identified as Manveer Kumar (25), a native of Bulandshahr in UP and Dharmendra (20), a native of UP’s Gorakhpur. Manveer was the driver of the van while Dharmendra was his helper.

The victims worked as contract employees in the circulation department of a Hindi newspaper. They were transporting newspapers to New Delhi railway station from the newspaper’s printing office in Noida when the accident took place.

According to the investigating officer, Manveer was driving his vehicle at the speed of more than 100kmph and failed to locate the stationary dumper on the extreme left hand side of the road.

The dumper had broken down and its driver had gone to call a mechanic.

To avoid an accident, he had switched on indicator lights of the dumper. Unfortunately, the van driver could not see it and rammed his vehicle straight into the dumper from behind.

The impact of the crash was so powerful that the front portion of the van was badly smashed and the victims got stuck inside.

“The rescue team took more than two hours to rescue the victims. A gas cutter was used in the operation. They were rushed to LNJP Hospital where the doctors declared them brought dead,” said the officer.

A case has been registered against the driver of the dumper, identified as Ranveer, at IP Estate police station.

Efforts are on to apprehend the accused driver.
