One of the country’s most secure prisons saw two of its inmates escape when they were being transferred from one jail of the prison to another on Tuesday afternoon. While one was caught, the other is still missing.
According to Tihar Jail officials, the two were being transferred from the prison’s drug rehabilitation centre in jail number three to jail number one. The duo had been charged in different cases and had recently been sent to Tihar.
The jail officials have gotten a case registered at the Hari Nagar Police Station regarding the ‘missing’ inmate.
The two accused Satish Kalu (28) and Karan (24), both smack addicts, had been sent to drug rehab within the prison on March 11. While Kalu has been caught, Karan is still absconding.
“They were sent to the centre the day they were brought to Tihar. Today, they were being transferred back to jail number one via number two in our in-house transport van. When they reached jail number one, the two pushed open the van door and started running,” said a senior Tihar Jail official on the condition of anonymity.
After catching Kalu and scouring the compound, the Tihar officials called the police. The jail authorities are not sure whether Karan is hiding in the jail or has managed to escape.
The police have sounded an alert for Karan and have set up check points in the area.
The Tihar Jail has over 150 CCTV cameras and more than 700 people protecting the compound round-the-clock, equipped with INSAS assault rifles and light machine guns. “We are looking in the compound and most probably will find him soon. The complaint was made as a precautionary measure,” added the official.
Jail authorities said that inmates hooked to drugs are sent to the prison’s rehab facility on a routine basis and are brought back after an initial treatment.
Kalu and Karan are both residents of Uttam Nagar. While Kalu is involved in a case of brawl and attempted murder in Uttam Nagar, Karan was arrested for burglary in Vikaspuri. Jail officials are currently conducting investigations into the lapse in security.
