Cracking down on illegal parking, the East Delhi Municipal Corporation has converted 20 such sites into authorised parking in the last three months.
Located in and around the municipal headquarters in Patparganj Industrial area, the new sites have increased the civic body's revenue from R15 lakh to R50 lakh a month.
The regularisation process has also increased the total number of parking areas from 15 to 35. “At the time of trifurcation, east Delhi just had 15 authorised parkings but in the last few months we intensified the drive of converting more parking sites into authorised ones ,” said Mahek Singh, chairman standing committee of the east corporation.
There, however, are at least 100 more illegal parking sites in the region leading to a loss of several crore rupees to the corporation. The parking mafia regularly fleeces people by overcharging car owners who park their cars at the illegal sites. The corporation is also unable to stop people from parking their cars on the road side of busy markets, which clogs stretches such as Nirman Vihar and Preet Vihar.
To further increase the earnings from parking, the commissioner of east corporation, SS Yadav, proposed to hike parking charges in his annual budget announced earlier this month. If his proposal is accepted, the parking rates will increase from R10 for 10 hours to R10 for 30 minutes. An extra 50 per cent will have to be paid during the peak hours which lasts from 5pm to 9 pm.
