A 24-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped several times by four people, including one of her own friends, at a north Delhi village, police said on Thursday.
The police said the incident came to light when a PCR van intercepted the vehicle, aboard which the victim was held hostage by the accused who had already sexually assaulted her once, at north Delhi’s Burari.
“The vehicle had tinted glasses and was intercepted to investigate some suspicious activity at a checkpoint,” said an officer.
“Four men, later identified as Shakil, 23, Lajpatrai Sachdeva, 38, Irshad, 30 and Abid, 21, were arrested,” he said.
Instead of halting, the driver accelerated the vehicle when flagged-down by the PCR van. A message to waylay the offending vehicle was relayed to other units deployed in the area.
“However, the same PCR van that had first flagged down the offending vehicle was able to apprehend it. The occupants were directed to step out and the victim was rescued,” the officer said.
According to the police, the victim then related the entire episode and claimed that she had been abducted by Shakil whom she had gone to meet at Swaroop Nagar.
Shakil, the victim told the police, had been in the company of the other three accused and had pinned her down before taking turns to sexually assault her.
“After their first sexual assault on her, the men forced her into their car where they again took turns to rape her as one of them drove. They were headed to Burari when they were intercepted,” the officer said.
The police said the victim is a resident of Rohini’s sector 16 where she stays with her brother-in-law. She hails from West Bengal’s 24 Parganas district. A case of gang rape has been registered at the Burari police station.
